There is a migration in April, May, and June when the sharks are observbed at the Gladden Area by divers. Each year during the full moon, Mutton and Cuberra snapper spawn here. The giant whale sharks come from far away to feed on the spawn and to mate. It is common on this dive to see schools of snapper in the thousands with whale sharks passing through them. Divers will likely see these majestic creatures very close, but they are not allowed to chase, ride, touch, or otherwise disturb the Whale Sharks. They mistake the scuba tank bubbles for eggs. Despite their size, whale sharks are remarkably gentle and curious. The whale shark's gentle nature makes swimming with them a special treat for divers and snorkelers. The whale shark's curiosity even pulls fishing parties into its thrall. Sometimes whale sharks seem to be asking to be petted as they glide alongside our fishing boats.
The optimum dates for 2010 & 2011 are April 25 to May 09, May 24 to June 07, and June 23 to July 04. These dives are up to 100 feet in depth and recommended for advanced divers. Even if no whale sharks are spotted, divers will have quality encounters with large schools of fish that are in the area to spawn.
